He could have fought it. He’d been fighting for his life in quite the literal sense for long enough that he could push at Mingyu with his knees, his feet - grip him around the middle between his legs and flip him off the bed. He didn’t. Instead he let Mingyu manhandle him, let him pin his arms and straddle his hips. He sucked in a breath, aroused despite himself, and met Mingyu’s eyes rather than let his gaze trail down those opening robes.

“Did I say you should?” He asked quietly.

He didn’t pull at his wrists, just kept solid and still as the man sat poised above him.

“You could come with me.”

"I'm not dressed for the cold," Mingyu dismissed, not wanting to get into how much he did not wish to investigate dismembered corpses. Instead, he kissed Lee Chang softly on the lips, then trailed kisses down the line of his jaw, over his throat.

"Tell him something came up." Mingyu smirked, briefly pausing in his work to look up at Lee Chang's face. "You."

The layered silks from courtesans that Lee Chang had haphazardly combined into a semblance of what could be called real clothing did very little to hide the fact that Mingyu was correct, but he groaned softly at the innuendo anyway.

It was very tempting to lie here in Mingyu’s bed and forget the world for a while. But something was still nagging at the back of his mind, despite the words that came between. At least the others are honest to themselves and pay me for my time. He suked in another breath and shut his eyes. Why couldn’t he just - let himself enjoy whatever it was they were? What did it matter if he was the only one or not? He never would be. At the very least, he would be sharing his love with a ghost. And yet it still gnawed at him, clawing from the inside as his fingers curled in Mingyu’s grip.

He parted his lips, about to ask, but the words wouldn’t rise to his lips.

Instead, he just pulled his head and shoulders up off the bed, straining his arms backward where they were still pinned, and stole another kiss from those deadly beautiful lips.

Mingyu kissed back hard, drawing it out until they were both breathless, rocking his hips ever so slightly into Lee Chang's own—

And then he stopped.

He sat up, released Lee Chang, and slid out of his lap.

"Do send Wangji my regards."

Lee Chang was a little dazed when Mingyu finally and suddenly released him, falling back to the bed for a moment just to groan in disappointment. But he really did need to go. He’d never understood councillors who lapsed in their duties to spend time with courtesans before, but he was starting to, now.

He swung his legs over the side, and tried to rearrange his robes to hide his - ah - obvious excitement. It was a little of a lost cause but at least maybe it wouldn’t be immediately visible when he left the room.

“Are--” No, wrong question. Mingyu was definitely working, and asking him if he was going to was just going to make Lee Chang feel worse. He changed tack. “How late are you working tonight? Will you need a drink after?”

He couldn’t bring himself to ask Can I come see you tonight, not willing to hear or think about himself in the same group as all the other men who came to Mingyu’s bed. Even though, by all rights, and Mingyu’s admission, he was barely any different than any of them.

"Fully booked again, so the usual time," Mingyu informed, rising to help adjust Lee Chang's clothes into some kind of order. Then he shook some money out of his purse and pressed it into Lee Chang's hands.

"Dinner, too, if you don't mind. Bring a change of clothes, if you have one," he teased gently, thought for a second, and handed Lee Chang the rest of his purse.

"...get some, if you don't have one. I'll see you after."

He tried not to let his expression reflect how he felt about ‘fully booked’, a queasiness roiling in his stomach. Instead he just nodded, taking the purse and slipping it into his robes.

He paused, knowing that there was something he could - or should - say, and yet not being able to find it on his tongue. Instead he just made a low sound and leaned in to steal a much softer, gentler kiss.

“Be careful,” was all he murmured, before he turned to leave.
