ooh lord, go on
WHO: Ignacio "Nacho" Varga + Vanessa Ives
WHEN: Part II of the arc!
WHERE: The Barracks
WHAT: THIEVERY.
WARNINGS: Will update as needed!
[It's not like he doesn't know it's wrong. And if there weren't hungry kids involved, he wouldn't do it. Not to someone in their crew. He tells himself that anyone hoarding jewelry or anything expensive deserves it. That it's more important to make sure all the little kids can fill their bellies than it is to let someone keep something that might help them to themselves. Not like he's just doing it for himself, this time.
That's what he tells himself, anyway.
He sees the clothes as he pilfers through Vanessa's items, having picked the lock on her suitcase with relative ease. The clothes are... different. Kinda old-timey? But not like he's seen in a history book. They're pretty, just not like anything he's seen before, even only in pictures.
It's the jewelry that he's most interested in, though. That's what he removes.
To sell, or barter for food with. For the kids.
It's not the jewelry Nacho's looking at when she happens upon him, though. It's a... doll? Or something? Actually, he's not sure what it is. And this, well, he has no intention of taking it. He's going to put it back. But he can't help his own curiosity, to try to figure out what it is first.
Brow furrowed, he turns it over in his hands, feeling the crunchiness of it under the covering, trying to decipher what it is he's holding. He's so intent on what he's looking at that he doesn't hear or feel someone coming up behind him.]

Except, as she silently approaches, her focus narrows on the appearance of the burlap doll that peeks over his shoulder. The thief meddles with things he really should not.
Having had enough of bold strangers touching things they should not, her knife is in hand, but it remains hidden in the folds of her skirt while she looms behind. Staring down at him with eyes pale and unblinking, Vanessa's whisper grates like sandpaper. There's a sharp smile to greet him if he turns, but she makes no move to stop him. ]
Take caution, it may be cursed. I have heard rumors that a witch has claimed this bedside.

Nacho jumps a little when he hears a voice from somewhere behind him. It's not a full jump; more like a tiny jolt inside his skin. He's usually good at being aware of his surroundings, so for someone to sneak up on him so easily is almost a shock to his system.
He sets the doll down and looks up, over his shoulder, to look her in the eye. Shame spreads through him like wildfire.]
So. Uh. I'm guessing these are yours then?
[It's might be a somewhat blasé statement, and the quiet, bland tone of his voice doesn't help. He pulls his hands up, though, to show surrender, and there's definitely a little bit of guilt edging up onto his face. His shoulders are slightly cowed, hunched. She doesn't seem that pissed off yet, though, so he tries for the beginnings of a sheepish kind of smile.]

Are they? Are you calling me a witch?
[ Offended? Amused? Perhaps she's still teasing, or perhaps she's been dead serious since the beginning. She isn't giving it away with her mannerisms, in the least. Of course, it's easy to guess that these are her belongings considering the similar clothing, even if she's rather dressed down given they're in the middle of a siege. ]
I can say that whatever it is you are hoping to find, you take dark risks in rifling through a woman's secrets. We are known for keeping the dangerous ones.

He also does resist the urge to smack himself on the forehead when she asks if he was calling her a witch!]
Oh. Uh. No. That's not what I... uh... I mean. Do you want to be called one?
[He stops short. He can't tell if she's playing with him or genuinely angry. He suspects playing, but he also really, really doesn't want to be wrong.
But he also doesn't want to be a coward, either. Nacho sucks in a breath and stands. Hands still up, though he does force himself to meet and hold her gaze.]
Look, ma'am, I'm sorry. I'm going to level with you -- I was just looking for anything valuable I could sell to get food for the people who need it. [The kids, especially.] Jewelry, shit like that. I promise I was going to put your weird little evil doll thingy back.
[People just don't carry things like that around where he's from, okay, can you blame a guy for being curious???]
