Memory 1: power source there would be the dark water/ mirror shard they found. Memory 2: so, the Merchant coyly admitted to knowing the technological and magical institute, and some in the party speculated he might have been the individual who resigned the institute in the face of what he considered unethical practices with the dark water. This was never formally confirmed (until now!)
Re: if you want to summarize (fully get what you mean), I'd say your biggest takeaways are:
Memory i: Matthias authorized a magical storm, expecting rivals on other ships would withdraw from the power source he wanted Ellethia's institute of technology and magic to reach first. (This ties into River's memory)
Memory ii: Matthias knew the Merchant + encountered a young woman who seemed to have lost any respect for him for years.
Both are memories Matthias at one point had extracted and sent for eradication in the cauldron, so he finds they're either emotionally charged, incriminating or somehow intolerable.
Noteworthy on your side is also that Karsa can now make the memory potions, so folks can keep their memories when they leave by beacon.
