Peering into the well, Red sees a faint, darkish translucent liquid that breaks into oil slick-like colours. The well appears filled high, close to hand's reach. It does not feel like the dark water and, in fact, invites touch. The closer to it she gets, Red may experience the echoes of strangers' memories, reflected in the well water (brief glimpses of a mother fondly looking at her firstborn, the sound of a young man biding good day to his family after returning from a first day of work, a marital argument — dozens of stolen moments).
For a brief moment, Red may fleetingly see Matthias' face in the well as well, barking at Cosette not to leave and not to be unreasonable.
If Red touches the water, it will crystallize in small pearl-like spheres. She can have a handful. If she only uses a recipient, the well water stays liquid. The liquid or solid status of the water doesn't change its properties, this is just to help it with portability. Red can also choose to take none of it along!
