[ As he was not, himself, given the physical demonstrations of comfort Lockwood both understood and respected that Lan Wangji kept himself to himself. As a rule. It also meant that the skittish touch to his shoulder might as well have been the most hearty of supportive claps. He appreciated it for what it was meant to convey, even if it was an inherently awkward gesture for them both.

Figuring the best way for him to convey his appreciation was by not making a big deal of the moment, Lockwood kept his eyes focused on the spirit as she moved past yet another empty grave. He also figured that the older man's direct statement about Lockwood's world was a perfect stopping point for that conversation as well. There really wasn't more to say that wouldn't have come across as trite and disingenuous. There was a lot not to like about his world and very little to recommend it. No sense belaboring that point. ]

Do you think she might be receptive to a more direct offer of help? Something a step beyond simply escorting her?

[As a rule, Lockwood tended to keep his own counsel when it came to plans, and he rushed in where angels feared to tread. Perhaps Lan Wangji -having experienced the younger man's impetuous nature- would recognize the respect offered in Lockwood's deliberate choice to invite the older man's input on the idea. Rather than just barreling forward with whatever he had planned. ]
