( — then, their efforts are stymied. Heartbeats accrue, he waits, he waits and she does not return to him. The horizon, at depth, with bodies slamming riotously into their own, is a clutter, a madness. He sees little, gaze slanted — but then she comes into view, the grasp of the corpse denying her, and he understands enough.

They can struggle to coax the corpse's grip free, he supposes. Two persons might do what Caitlyn, fighting savagely and lone, did not. But then, there is the simpler solution, and this round, when he routes the spooling noose of his wire and rounds it, this time, on the creature's hand, at the wrist.

One tug, slight — the corpse's long, wrenched howl is like a guttering candle flame — and then Caitlyn may find herself clinging to the undead thing's severed hand, while Lan Wangji waves her to swim, swim up, swim up now. )
