"Yes, I am well aware, and I have considered that possibility, believe me," he says. Well, maybe not the specific possibility that will crush him, but just it going sideways, generally speaking. "But I'm also not fond of the possibility of getting eaten alive by whatever's down there. I'm just saying, in a pinch? It's always a last resort, should all else fail."

That's all he means, because he dislikes things when he doesn't know how they work, but sometimes he just doesn't get the luxury of testing beforehand. This might turn into one of those situations.
