That was the question, wasn't it? She had been sent out to find treasure and they had never expressly said when she should be back. There certainly would be a grace period, if she had someone dunced the entire thing up and got lost. Why not let them think that she wasn't nearly as smart as others. Being lost meant more time alone to do as she pleased.
