They have need to read and write and count, some of them at least. The day laborers, miners and fishermen care only for their next meal, but those of higher status would educate.

I don't remember seeing school buildings, and I did not think to ask about that in the few bookshops I visited, but it might be worthwhile to look for it. I won't be able to make sense of the writing if I cannot match it to a sound.
