[ Five can feel the balance shift once he latches onto his back, and he fights keep his leverage. If his arms were longer, his original plan may have worked. Or if he hadn't been so singularly focused on knocking him over, he would have paid more attention to depth of the water. But the ground is slick and the river has more of a pull than he anticipates, and it sweeps them downstream in the middle of his attempt to strangle him.
His movements are frantic and unrelenting in his efforts that take little else into account. He doesn't concern himself with drowning, knowing he can blink away once he stops getting tossed around, but he won't trust that he's safe until he leaves the other man's corpse behind him. Any history between them is disregarded, and he thinks that the bottom of a lake is as good of a place as any. As it pulls them under, Lan Wangji's thrashing proves that he's not the only one out of his element. Still, his grip loosens enough that he's flung solidly against a wall and he releases the breath he was holding on contact.
Expecting to inhale a lungful of water, his eyes go wide when it doesn't choke him. Apparently Lan Wangji has already made the same discovery, unfortunately taking drowning out of the equation. He takes a few experimental breaths, then glances upwards to see how far away they are from the surface.
Lan Wangji's body, with his massive sleeves and loose clothing, blocks sight of the fish at first. Then they swarm like a cloud, coming in from all directions.
Five yelps when one immediately bites his cut palm and he curses silently when he realizes his folly in attracting them with his blood. He shakes his hand until it releases him, but as soon as it does it seems to multiple by ten. The choice becomes either blinking them both to land to finish it there, or using this to his advantage.
Fuck. There are too many, and for every he dodges, he feels one more pierce any exposed skin. He kicks and violently thrashes to get above them, hoping to use Lan Wangji as a barrier between them. In the center of the swarm, he can't see anything but the occasional flutter of white. Finally, he pushes himself forward and tries to grab hold of the other man's pale sleeve to pull him back before he can swim away. ]
