[ Five anticipates every possible angle of attack, and calculates his exit points with the tired efficiency of someone who has been hunted many times before. He's so acutely aware of the danger around him that he's practically vibrating when Lan Wangji takes in his scent and openly mocks his chances against him. With it stirs a deep disgust, in his vulnerability and the trap he played into, lined with an uncanny fear that he can only recognize by the racing of his pulse.
He freezes when another (much larger) beast emerges, mentally adjusting his next move, but it doesn't come close to reaching him. As Lan Wangji strangles it with the rope intended for him, he thinks for a moment that it might be enough to satisfy him. Then he tells him to run. Not because he thinks he can get away, but to prolong the chase.
So he does.
The path is immediately abandoned for the thicker cover of the forest. He doesn't teleport, partially because he's already done it too many times in a row, and some dim logic tells him that maybe that's the trick to get past the walls. He's practically flying even without it, and he gains confidence when he meets no resistance as he weaves between the trees. Cornering him might have been a fatal mistake for most, but he's smart enough to use fear to his advantage; let it make him faster, more agile, and drive him right past his natural limits.
It isn't until the sounds of struggling behind him have quieted that he notices that he's still dripping blood from his hands. The bandages are completely saturated, especially the one on the left that held the knife. Of course the deepest wounds on him are self-inflicted. If Lan Wangji, or any other beast out here is able to track him, he needs to take care of that.
Five stumbles on a lake as if he'd willed it to appear and quickly drops beside it. He rinses out the cuts, and lingers only long enough to catch his breath and assess his surroundings. Trees, rocks, a wealth of underbrush. Cover that he never had in the apocalypse and plenty that he can use to his advantage.
Gingerly, he balls a fist and tests his energy level and is reassured by the steady blue glow. That's good. Forget what happened before. This is his forest now, and they won't catch him by surprise again. ]
