The blood that leaks from his palm is a secondary to his need to escape, but it makes his hands slippery and uncoordinated when a rope fits around his arm and he drops the knife at the same time he's yanked to the side.

Again he has to fight against the compulsion to run, because he doesn't know where the walls are. The open path provides no protection, and there's nothing but sticks and rocks left at his disposal to fight with.
A quick glance at the trees. He has vague memories of the tower, and the barriers set there to hold back the hoard that lasted for hours of constant beating. Time he doesn't have. Could he get above them or risk finding the hole?
Movement again; and what sounds like hooves thundering in the distance. He sees the tips of their antlers poking between the trees, all at a gallop, and he tries to split his attention between them. ]
