He opts not to say it can be both, displeasure and the desire for a person to overcome, to make more of themselves, to do better. Yet better according to what becomes the question, and there are other truths, which this fits in with neatly.

"You're not wrong. He seeks to promote people's capabilities in succeeding."

He tolerates failure, when it doesn't mean ceasing. When it's not buckling down. When it's not success become anathema to his own internalised considerations.

"Rest assured, he especially cares to see young men succeed."

Said as if both he and his husband don't look like men merely in their twenties.
