[ kaneki has no issues with hunters. In fact, he is pretty sure he can deal with all of them easily, thus he walks through the forest without fear of them - it's the spirits he worries about, alongside with the illusions and mirages the forest can create.

But due to the ancestral curse he was given upon arrival at the village, he must atone and that means he must walk into the forest in order to find food that he will later share with the villages and those who need it. Boards, deer, rabbits - any kind of animal that humans could eat, really. Hopefully with this, he can make emends with whatever spirits insist on cursing people from this place.

While he does so, Kaneki carries a small backpack he made himself with pieces of clothing, and there he keeps the haunted doll he had found not so long ago. Honestly he tried to get rid of it in many different ways no, but the doll always returned to him, and eventually he accepted it was easier to carry her than to ignore or find her in the middle of the path (it's a lot less disturbing too). Inside that same backpack there is also a non-human beating heart he acquired when he first arrived and still does not know what it is for.

And like this, he walks through the forest, hoping not to spook his prey. Kagunes are surprisingly handy at hunting animals too, not just other ghouls.

But when he hears a familiar voice calling for him, he stops and turns his head trying to find where exactly the voice came from. Another mirage, perhaps? This forest surely knows how to call for him ]
