[Perhaps there is a rawness to it all, that opens him up. Years of pain and hatred - so much against himself, so much he doesn't comprehend - and Xue Yang stares at Xingchen, his cheeks burning, wetness in his eyes that he is not aware of either.

He's not stupid, Xue Yang. He's learned to read well enough to decipher the Yiling laozu's secret scrolls. He's figured out new techniques after mastering what no one but the laozu himself could. He knows how to manipulate, how to twist words so they are sharper than any knife, how to win against superior cultivators through use of his wit and dirty tactics, all of which requires smarts. Quick thinking, street savvy, wicked mind.

But right now he looks lost, going beyond confusion into oblivion. Who has ever taught him how he feels?]
